PARIS – Bomb alert prompted evacuation of about 2,000 from the Eiffel Tower and its immediate surrounding on Tuesday, the police said.

According to Paris police official, the management of Eiffel Tower received an anonymous telephone call around 8:30pm that triggered bomb alert.

Several busloads of police officers were seen under the tower, inside the cordoned-off area.

Foreign and French tourists, were asked to stay on the nearby Seine river banks, while the tower area was cordoned off.

Police officers on the site declined to give any details, and numerous calls to Paris police headquarters were not immediately returned.

The 324-metre Eiffel Tower was built by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 Paris World Fair, on the centenary of the French revolution, and is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the world.
