Thunderstorm in vicinity of Venezuela plane crash

STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania - reports thunderstorms appeared to be in the area at the time of a plane crash in eastern Venezuela Monday, September 13, 2010.

According to satellite data, a thunderstorm was in the vicinity of the airport at takeoff, although lightning data will not be available for another few hours.

The Associated Press reports the plane crashed shortly after takeoff at around 10:00 am local time (1430 GMT).

The aircraft was en route to Margarita Island from the airport in Guayana, Venezuela, when it went down about 6 miles from the airport.

The ATR43 twin-turboprop aircraft was carrying 47 passengers and 4 crew members on board, an transportation official told CNN.

Jose Bonalde, head of fire services and the scene, told Reuters that 13 corpses had been removed from the plane.

The AP also reports that at least 23 people were taken to hospitals.
