Seychellois students receive Cuban medical scholarships
VICTORIA, Mahe - The Cuban Resident Ambassador to Seychelles, Mrs. Maria Nogales Jimenez, presented three Seychellois students with medical scholarships in an official handing over ceremony today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
These scholarships are the result of discussions that President James A. Michel had with the Cuban authorities during his official visit to Cuba last November, after which Seychelles was offered ten scholarships in the field of medicine, three of which were presented to Tracy Tirant, 19; Karine Larue, 20; and Brigitte Lepathy, 24; this morning. Seychelles is the only country to receive such scholarships this year.
These students will be studying at the Latin America School of Medicine in Cuba where more than 3,000 from 100 countries are already pursuing studies. The scholarships are for a period of seven years and they depart on Saturday, September 4.
On presenting the scholarships the Cuban Ambassador wished the young students every success in their studies so that they could make their country proud and return as skilled doctors. The Ambassador concluded by saying that she was sure Cuba would welcome the three young women as if their own.
“These scholarships are a continuation of the longstanding relations that Seychelles has with Cuba and we have a long history of Seychellois students attending university there,” said the Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr Maurice Loustau Lalanne. “Many of the key people in Seychelles today, both in the public and private sector, are graduates who trained in Cuba thanks to this educational support.”
There are presently 20 Seychellois in Cuba pursuing studies in different areas (medicine, agriculture, IT, economics, accounting, agriculture, engineering, sports). To date, more than 280 Seychellois (surgeon, Specialists Doctors, engineers) have graduated from Cuba among which the Vice President, Mr. Danny Faure; Minister for Health, Ms. Erna Atanacious; and Secretary of State, Mr. Barry Faure are included.
The handing over ceremony was also attended by key representatives from HRDC and the Ministry of Health.
