BRUSSELS — The European Commission said Thursday it has banned one airline from Ghana from flying to Europe and imposed restrictions on a second airline from the same country because of poor safety.

"Meridian Airways from Ghana is included in the list of banned airlines as a consequence of a series of very poor results from inspections involving not only their aircraft but also facilities used by the airline in the EU," the commission said in a statement.

The commission, the European Union's executive arm, also banned three Airlift International aircraft, it said. Both companies are cargo airlines.

The commission regularly publishes a list of passenger and cargo airlines which are banned from flying to its 27 member countries because they aren't considered safe enough.
