Two Polish tourists were briefly kidnapped in Lebanon’s Beqaa valley on Tuesday but were freed after security forces opened fire on their captors at a checkpoint, killing one of them, the Lebanese army said.

It said the tourists were seized near the town of Baalbek by two men and taken away by car. When the car approached a checkpoint north of the town, the driver ignored instructions to stop and the army opened fire.

One of the captors, Rashid Jaafar, was killed, and the other fled, the army said in a statement. Security sources said the two Poles were unhurt and were released after being questioned by police.
