Police helicopters have been sent in to rescue around 300 stranded holiday makers at a Hokkaido resort and residents in northern Japan on Wednesday, August 25, 2010.

There was no other way to get out, after floods washed away the only bridge in the area.

Said a rescued man, "It was extremely scary, because all night long we could hear the earth rumbling as if rocks were falling."

The area is famous for its hot springs and popular with local hikers and mountaineers.

Record rainfall has been falling over the northern island of Hokkaido since early Monday.
