Airport news: Frontier to continue Aspen flights

Frontier Airlines will continue flying to Aspen after all, despite saying last month it planned to end flights to the ritzy mountain resort town after Sept. 30.

The Denver- and Milwaukee-hubbed airline will hang onto three turboprop Bombardier Q400 aircraft it had planned to dispose of to fly between Aspen-Pitkin County Airport and Denver International Airport, Frontier said Tuesday.

Previously, Frontier’s parent company, Republic Airways Holdings Inc., had planned to phase out the Bombardiers that had been used by Frontier’s discontinued short-haul Lynx affiliate to service Aspen. Frontier reportedly determined that its remaining Airbus and Embraer aircraft are less well suited for Aspen service. But now, Frontier will retain enough planes to service Aspen.

Frontier plans to fly once in each direction daily between Oct. 1 and Nov. 17, twice a day between Nov. 18 through Dec. 15, and four times a day from Dec. 16 through April 2011.

Frontier officials did not indicate what caused the change of heart.

Also last month, Delta Air Lines said it was pulling out of the Aspen market this winter. Delta previously flew to Aspen from Salt Lake City and Atlanta during ski season.

Aspen still expects to be served by 12 daily United Express flights from Denver this winter as well as three each from Chicago and Los Angeles and one daily from San Francisco.
