A 17-year-old English tourist lost a finger after being attacked in Dublin city centre on St Patrick's Day.

The teenager, a pianist, was walking on O'Connell Street at about 2000 GMT, when a group of youths asked him where he was from.

When he told them he was from England the gang attacked him. The victim was able to get away, but not before his finger was severed.

GardaĆ later searched for the missing finger but it could not be found.

Ther injured teenager underwent surgery in Dublin's Mater Hospital on Tuesday.

A Garda spokesman said: "We are trying to establish the exact sequence of events from the night in question and to establish if the hand injury was sustained following an assault."
