Murder rocks peaceful island of Phuket
Chiang Mai, Thailand (eTN) - A massive manhunt on Thailand's holiday island of Phuket is going on following the murder of a Swedish female.
Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat has reportedly arrived in Phuket to inspect Mai Khao beach where a Swedish female tourist was murdered on Sunday night.
The deputy governor of Phuket province, Worapot Rattasima, said initial reports point to the murderer being a local who lives near the crime scene. Police have said they are treating this as a very serious case and are doing all they can to track down the murderer.
The dead victim has been identified by police as 27-year-old Hannah Charlotte Bankluns.
Hat Mai Khao is still an unspoiled beach in the Northern part of Phuket Island. Located some 35 kilometers away from Phuket City and within close proximity to Phuket International Airport, the beach is an 11 kilometers stretch of sand and as an onshore turtle nesting ground part of the Sirinath Marine National Park. With buildings set back from the beach according to regulations, the 265-room resort of the JW Marriott blends well into the natural surroundings. Also, during the tsunami on 26 December 2004, the beach was hard-hit and slowed development accordingly until the present.
Phuket is Thailand's most popular, busy and wealthy island as the whole province enjoys the coming of tourists from all over the world since the 1970s.
