Turkish investors to invest $24 billion in tourism by 2023

ANKARA - Turkish tourism investors have plans to make a total investment of 24 billion U.S. dollars in Turkish tourism industry by 2023, the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the country, an official said on Saturday.

"Our target is to host 71 million tourists in 2023 and earn an income of 85 billion U.S. dollars from tourism in the 100th anniversary of Turkey," Turgut Gur, head of Tourism Investors' Association of Turkey, was quoted as saying by Anatolia news agency.

"We are working on plans for new investments and new investment areas," said Gur, adding that Turkish investors would concentrate on efforts to diversify forms of tourism.

He said culture and religious tourism should be improved in Turkey.

According to recent data, the number of tourists visiting Turkey reaches eight million during January-May period in 2010.

According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the number of foreigners visiting the country rose by 10.14 percent year-on-year during this period and Turkey expects a 10-12 percent rise in tourist number this year.

World Trade Organization estimates a growth rate for global tourism between 3 and 4 percent in 2010.

Nearly 27 million tourists visited Turkey last year, a 2.5 percent rise compared with 2008, although global tourism contracted 4 percent and European tourism plunged 6 percent. Turkey earned 21 billion U.S. dollars from tourism in 2009.
