Giving the cities of Mathura, Vrindavan, and Varanasi a fresh lease on life, Mayawati, chief minister (CM) of Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, ordered on Saturday that the three locations be developed as "model tourist destinations." In keeping with the orders, the CM further said that infrastructure facilities like drinking water supply, electricity, sewer, roads, flyovers and parkings must be put in order to ensure that tourists do not face problems while visiting these cities.

Setting deadlines for ongoing flyover construction projects, the chief minister said that work on the sewage treatment plant and solid waste management in Varanasi be ramped up. Among other diktats issued by the CM, officials have been instructed to construct and beautify the ghats across the river Ganga and start work on the 58-kilometer ring road in Varanasi.

Significantly, all three cities of the state are expected to see a large turnout of tourists this year owing to the Commonwealth Games starting in October. The Commonwealth Games is a multinational, multi-sport event that features competitions involving thousands of elite athletes from members of the Commonwealth of Nations. The event is organized every four years and is the third-largest multi-sport event in the world, after the Summer Olympic Games and the Asian Games.

While most of the orders will not be implemented by the time the games commence, the orders, once implemented are likely to add to the cities' popularity among other tourist destinations in the state.
