MUMBAI, India - Capt. C. P. Krishnan Nair, chairman of The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts, was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s highest civilian honor by the Honorable President of India, Smt. Pratibha Patil, in a glittering ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan, the Presidential Palace in New Delhi on March 31.

Established in 1954, the Padma Bhushan Award is the highest civilian decoration conferred by India's President to recognize distinguished and exceptional services of the highest order to the nation from all professional fields.

Capt. Nair began his career in the textile business developing India’s handloom industry and helped to create the All Indian Handloom Board. In the late 1950s, he was instrumental in introducing “bleeding madras” fabric to the US, which met with spectacular success.

Since opening his first hotel in 1987 in Mumbai, Capt. Nair has built The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts into a luxury brand to be reckoned with. The Leela has set a new benchmark for luxury hotels in India, providing discerning business and leisure travelers with the finest in guest services. With “Atithi Devo Bhava” (the “guest is god”) as his guiding principle, Capt. Nair has built a team of over 5,000 associates, assisting him in delighting guests at each of his Leelas and in putting The Leela on the global map.
