New Chairman Wants New Name

Nigerian Eagle Airlines set for yet another name change

Moses Sawacha, eTN  Apr 30, 2010

NIGERIA - Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim, the new chairman of target="_blank">Nigerian Eagles Airlines, formerly Virgin Nigeria, has said that the airline would be given a new name in the next few days.

The new chairman and group managing director of Global Fleet Group, who last week acquired a 51 percent share in the airline, made this known during a chat with a journalist on Wednesday in Lagos.

According to Mr. Ibrahim, he is set to revive and refocus the airline, and that restructuring of the airline would take place in the area of finance and administration. He said that technically the airline is very sound and, therefore, would not need any changes in that area.

He said in refocusing the airline he would stabilize it at seven aircrafts and eventually move the fleet to 17, adding that at that stage, the airline would commence long-haul flights.

According to Mr. Ibrahim, the name of the airline he took over was Virgin Nigeria and not Eagle Airline. Mr. Ibrahim’s comment is seen in the light of disagreements between the immediate past Nigerian management and Richard Branson’s Virgin Atlantic over the use of the Virgin brand.

The immediate Nigerian past management of the airline early this year changed the name of the airline from Virgin Nigeria to Eagle Airlines.
