The bayside Mövenpick Hotel Izmir is located in the heart of the third most populous city in Turkey. Flanked by broad boulevards and beautiful walking areas, the hotel sits alongside the water bank of Izmir’s port, glass-fronted buildings and shopping centres.

Now in its sixth year of Green Globe Certification, Mövenpick Hotel Izmir continues to improve on its sustainable best practices with climate change at the forefront of its environmental initiatives.

Merih Hasaltun Yumlu, PR and Quality Manager at the hotel says, “Today’s lifestyle impacts on the environment and also affects climate change. And climate change is not limited to one region. Its damaging consequences are felt throughout the whole world. If we understand what a carbon footprint is, how it contributes to climate change then we can encourage everyone to think about their lifestyle and take the responsibility to reduce our individual footprint. Simple changes in our everyday lives can save the earth.”

Over the last six years, Mövenpick Izmir staff worked together with the Aegean Forest Foundation in planting 7,000 young trees.

“Planting started as a duty to a sustainability project begun in 2011, However, we realised that planting trees is one of the most effective ways to reduce our carbon footprint and improves the natural environment,” added Mrs. Hasaltun Yumlu.

To further reduce carbon emissions, the hotel offers free bicycles to guests to discover the city by bike. While in the gym, cloth bags are offered in place of plastic bags. The bags are made of material usually used to make slippers. Low flow taps have also been installed which saves up to 30% of water usage.

Social Responsibility is of key importance to the Mövenpick Hotel Izmir. Forty employees donated blood to meet the needs of patients in the community and to raise awareness of the benefit of blood donations. In appreciation, Officials of Kızılay thanked Mövenpick Izmir employees for their generous participation in saving many people’s lives.
