Medical tourism to Jordan surges 10% in 2009
AMMAN - The number of foreigners seeking medical treatment in Jordan rose by 10 percent in 2009 compared to the year 2008, showed figures released on Sunday.
A total of 220,000 foreign patients came to Jordan in 2009 to receive medical treatment compared to 200,000 patients in 2008, a study by Jordan's Private Hospitals Association (PHA) indicated.
The foreigners coming to Jordan to seek treatment generate about 1 billion U.S. dollars in revenues annually, according to official figures.
"In spite of the global financial crisis, Jordan's position as a destination for medical treatment was not affected as the number of foreign patients increased in 2009," PHA President Fawzi Hammouri told reporters at a press conference.
Topping the list of patients coming to Jordan for treatment in 2009 were the Iraqis, which represent 19 percent of the overall number, followed by Palestinians with 16 percent, Saudi nationals with 15 percent, Yemenis with 14 percent, Sudanese with 13 percent, Libyans with 9 percent and Syrians with 3 percent, according to the study.
The majority of the patients coming to Jordan seek treatment for heart and brain diseases, followed by kidney implantation, spinal and nervous system diseases, among others, showed the study.
