Pristine Jungle

Award winning rainforest resort in the green heart of Borneo

Kamil Abdul Hamid, eTN  Apr 04, 2010

Ulu Ulu Resort offers an excellent tour for nature lovers or just to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The national park is 50,000 hectares of pristine rainforest with examples of some of the best biodiversity in the world. Here, you will experience up close the wonders of the rainforest and listen to the orchestra of nature’s music by the insects, birds, and animals.

This tour is rated as a soft adventure and suitable for those reasonably fit as there are many steps to climb and some slippery and wet tracks. The journey to the national park from Bandar Seri Begawan is itself interesting as you go on three different modes of transport and see the change in vegetation - plenty of photo opportunities along the way. The trip departs BSB in the early morning and proceeds by speedboat to Bangar town where you will go overland to Batang Duri. At Batang Duri, you will go on a long boat or temuai up the rapids to the national park.

After registration and check-in into your villa, you will proceed for a wet slippery trek to Sg Apan waterfall by longboat and with some trekking. Once there, you can relax and swim in the waterfall. By noon, all meals are specially prepared by your in-house chef, with dishes based upon local favorites that are excellent. Mineral water is also provided. You are then at leisure until the Afternoon Tea at the club lounge. In the meantime, you can go kayaking, swimming in the river, or for the non-adventurous time of just relaxing and enjoying the serene majestic view of the surroundings. After dinner, you will be briefed on the next day’s program and then proceed for a night walk.

On day 2, morning call will be at 4:30 am, and after a quick cup of coffee or tea at the Valley Café, you will proceed on a canopy walk to take in the sunrise view that will literally take your breath away. When the morning mist lifts, you will see birds flying out to feed, hornbills soaring against the skyline, and gibbons calling across the treetops. After that, you proceed back to the Valley Cafe for breakfast. Breakfast is usually American with fruit juice plus a selection of cereals. Group tours may also specify their menu preference with advanced notice. BYO (beer and hard liquor) is allowed, according to the permitted quota, with proper clearance documentation done at the airport/entry checkpoints.

You may then proceed back to the villa to freshen up and prepare for checkout or enjoy sunbathing by the riverbank. Lunch will be served at the Two-River Terrace Café by 12 noon. After lunch and some water activities, freshen up and return downstream to Batang Duri and proceed to Bangar for the speedboat back to Bandar Seri Begawan.
