Small aircraft are now allowed to land again at the Bukoba aerodrome, while work on the runway and the terminal buildings continues. The field was closed to allow for a full rehabilitation and the lengthening of the airstrip itself, but weather and geological conditions delayed the work.

Once fully operational, the field will be able to handle larger turboprops, such as the commonly used ATRs, while at present only light single and twin engine aircraft with relatively small passenger capacities can fly in and out of Bukoba. A source in Dar es Salaam added that the work is expected to be finalized by mid-2010 at the latest, even if the unfavorable weather conditions prevail.
