BRUSSELS — The EU says North Korea's state-owned carrier Air Koryo has received a partial exemption from its airline blacklist, while some Iran Air jets will be banned from flying to Europe.

The index of 278 airlines lists carriers deemed by the EU not to meet international safety standards. It was established in 2006 and is updated annually.

The report noted safety improvements in Egypt and Angola. Angola's TAAG airline will also be allowed to fly to Europe with specific safe aircraft.

The latest list, released Tuesday, imposes an operating ban on all airlines from Sudan and the Philippines due to noncompliance with international safety conditions. Afghanistan's Ariana Airlines, Siam Reap Airways from Cambodia and Silverback Cargo from Rwanda already are banned from Europe for the same reason.
