Raising Security Levels

Indonesia ports ready to start biometric screening

eTN Staff Writer  Mar 27, 2010

Adisucipto International Airport (JOG) serving Yogyakarta in Java will be the first airport in Indonesia to introduce target="_blank">biometric security
systems with the installation of fingerprint and facial imaging technology. The rest of the country's air and sea ports will be rolled out in phases.

Partnering with SITA, the new infrastructure will be installed at 27 different entry points, and will enable the immigration department to check incoming passengers against watchlists, as well as better verify passports and visas.

"This new primary line clearance system from SITA significantly raises the level of security at Indonesia's international borders," said Erwin Azis, Indonesia's Immigration Information Systems, Imigrasi director. "The use of biometrics adds an extra element to the identification and verification of arrivals. We can now be confident that people match passports."
