The number of people taking holidays in Sri Lanka is at a record level, official figures have shown.

According to the country's tourism agency, new luxury beachfront resorts and wellness retreats within the jungle are among the accommodation options attracting overseas visitors.

In February, arrivals were up nearly 50 per cent compared with the same month in 2009, while the increase stood at 68 per cent among Britons alone.

Noting that the Indian Ocean destination appears to have recovered from the effects of the 2004 tsunami, Sri Lanka Tourism Development highlighted three wildlife parks that have recently opened - including Yala.

"Based in revamped eco lodges within the park, visitors are blanketed in Sri Lanka's rare and colourful birdlife. Parrots, kingfisher and painted storks, to name a few," the organisation stated.
