NADI, FIJI - Some hotels on a Fijian resort island have evacuated tourists as a tropical cyclone heads their way.

Fiji's weather bureau says cyclone Tomas could hit Fiji today. Australian tourists were among a number of people evacuated from Plantation Resort on Malolo LaiLai island to the main island of Viti Levu.

The Fiji Meteorological Service said damaging gales and heavy rain were expected to start affecting Vanua Levu, Taveuni and surrounding small islands and the northern Lau group late last night.

''Winds should increase to destructive storm force (over 87km/h) or very destructive hurricane force (over 117km/h) Monday morning,'' it warned on its website.
