Starting in May, Frontier Airlines will no longer be flying out of Mineta San Jose International Airport.

The airline informed the city last week that it will cut its flight service from the airport May 14. Frontier had two daily flights to Denver out of San Jose.

Airport spokesman David Vossbrink says San Jose already has lost about a quarter of its flights and passengers over the past two years. He says Frontier only accounts for 1 percent of the airport's flights.

Vossbrink says the lost carrier could cost the airport more than $2 million annually, although many Denver-bound passengers are likely to switch to other airlines serving San Jose.

Airline spokeswoman Lindsey Purves cited the high cost of operating out of San Jose but says it will be adding flights at the nearby San Francisco airport.
