Hollywood stars tipped to send UK tourism soaring
Hollywood hunks Johnny Depp and Russell Crowe are tipped to send the UK tourism industry soaring this year after filming blockbuster movies at historic sites.
Pirates of the Caribbean star Depp, now the Mad Hatter in the latest incarnation of Alice in Wonderland, shot scenes at the 18th century Antony House in Cornwall, southern England.
Gladiator actor Crowe, currently starring as Robin Hood, filmed scenes at Freshwater Beach, a picturesque strip of Welsh coastline.
Both movies were due to be released in May.
The National Trust, which protects and promotes both sites, expected tens of thousands of extra tourists as a result.
Visitors to Antony House could even enjoy the Alice in Wonderland Experience, complete with a visit to Alice's bedroom and an exhibition of installations from the film in the site's extensive grounds.
National Trust director general Fiona Reynolds said the charity earned up to £3 million (US$4.6 million) from films, including location fees, since 2007.
