American Airlines will begin charging $8 for blankets starting on May 1. The airline will not have blankets available at all for flights less than two hours. On flights greater than two hours, passengers can pay $8 for a package that will contain a blanket and an inflatable neck pillow. If you buy one, the airline will give you a $10 coupon for purchases over $30 at Bed, Bath and Beyond stores.

American Airlines won't be the first to charge for blankets. JetBlue and US Airways charge $7 for a blanket and pillow set. US Airways also throws in earplugs and eye shades.

A spokesperson for American Airlines says the decision was an economic one.

You will still get a free blanket if you travel to most international locations. The airline says the charge will be for flights in the US, Canada, Hawaii, Mexico, Caribbean, and Central America. Blankets will still be free in business and first class.
