The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, located conveniently en route to Murchisons Falls National Park, has just distributed their 2010 rates. Readers interested in more details should write to [email protected] for more details and to subscribe to regular updates from the sanctuary through their mailings.

Entrance for the sanctuary remains free for all visitors, but tracking of the rhinos โ€“ initial access by car and then by foot under the guidance of experienced rangers โ€“ will cost 50,000 Uganda Shillings for foreign nonresidents, while East African residents pay 25,000 Uganda Shillings. Ugandan citizens are set back by a mere 7,000 Uganda Shillings, offering encouragement to visit the sanctuary and learn about the breeding program and it current success.

The meals available at the sanctuaryโ€™s restaurant will set guests back a very reasonable 10,000 UShs for breakfast; 14,000 UShs for lunch; and 20,000 UShs for supper, an absolute bargain considering the prices charged elsewhere. The adjoining bar offers a variety of local beers, soft drinks, spirits, and fresh juices. This correspondent has repeatedly eaten there and can vouch for the tasty home-cooked food.

Overnight prices in the guest houses, partly with shared bathrooms and most suitable for families, will set one back 70,000 UShs, inclusive of an overnight sanctuary fee of 20,000 UShs, while the backpackers dorms go for 50,000 UShs, again inclusive of the overnight sanctuary fee. Camping, available on a dedicated nearby camp site, attracts a fee of 25,000 UShs per tent, per night. Children up to 4 years stay for free, while kids up to 12 years pay half price on accommodation and meals.

Everyone on the sanctuary is now standing by waiting for the birth of the third rhino baby, due any time now, after the two other females had given birth to young rhino males earlier in the year.
