Bulgaria's civil protection service in Kazanluk, in central Bulgaria, rescued 60 tourists trapped by snow-drifts in three chalets atthe foot of Bouzloudja peak on February 17 2008.

Kazanluk mayor Stefan Damyanov personally co-ordinated the operation, which went on for four hours, zagrada.bg reported.

Strong winds, reaching up to 72km/h, and snow-falls hindered the rescuers.

The wind and snow also broke off branches and blew down roofs throughout the Stara Planina region. No people were injured and no major material damages were reported, Darik Radio said.
