Canada: US tourist numbers down, overseas numbers up

Dec 17, 2009

Americans made fewer trips to Canada in October but tourists from overseas flocked to this country during the month, according to government data.

U.S. residents made only 1.6 million trips north of the border. That's a 2.6% drop from the previous month and the first decline in four months, Statistics Canada said yesterday.

Same-day road trips from the U.S. to Canada fell 2.3% to 617,000.

On the bright side for Canada's tourism industry, overnight trips by travellers from other countries actually rose by 3.2% to 332,000 in October.
