Hotel operators and local guides in Tanzania have voiced their concern over the migration of the hippos previously resident in Lake Babati. Hippos by the hundreds are migrating to other places now that the water level in the lake has shrunk from the drought.

Much of the water mass is now covered by weeds and water hyacinth, possibly affecting the habitat of the animals as well. Not long ago the area was featured as a tourism attraction on the cultural circuit available for visitors, but the loss of the hippo spectacle in the lake has put a damper on the locals’ hopes to make a sustainable living from the tourism industry.
