PUTRAJAYA - Garden tourism packages are next on the list of promotions to attract more foreign visitors and stimulate domestic travelling.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said Malaysia had great potential for garden tourism.

“We already have the infrastructure to meet the needs of such tourists,” she said at the press conference after a meeting with garden designers.

She said the parks and gardens that would be promoted were the Lake Gardens in Kuala Lumpur; Taman Warisan Pertanian, the Botanical Garden and Wawasan Park in Putrajaya; and the Bukit Cahaya Sri Alam Agricultural Park in Shah Alam.

Others are Fraser’s Hill, Taiping Park in Perak, Venice of Malaysia, Melati Lake and Gua Kelam in Perlis, Penang Hill, Penang Botanic Gardens, Tropical Fruit Farm and Tropical Spice Garden in Penang.

The Malacca Botanical Garden and the Garden of a Thousand Flowers in Malacca will also be promoted.

Dr Ng said her ministry would also participate in the Chelsea Flower Show next year to exhibit the richness of Malaysian flowers and plants.

British garden designer Jekka McVicar, who was invited to give feedback on Malaysia’s efforts to develop and revive gardens, said Malaysians took their flowers and plants for granted.

“What you’ve got here is what many other countries cannot have or grow.

“Plants like wild orchids, lotus flowers and bamboos should be promoted to attract tourists who are interested in garden packages,” she said.
