The search for a Scottish pensioner missing in South African mountains has been called off without any trace of him being found.

Michael Hetherington, 73, from Lossiemouth, disappeared while walking in the Drakensberg Mountains.

Despite seven days of intensive searching by mountain rescue teams, aircraft and sniffer dogs they have not been able to find him.

Rangers and walkers in the area will be asked to keep a lookout for him.

Mr Hetherington was last seen asking for directions to the 10,000ft tall Cathedral Peak, in the Drakensburg mountains near Durban.

His family told rescuers he is an experienced hiker who has climbed all of Scotland's Munros.

The bachelor, who travels to South Africa each year to visit relatives, is an elder at his local church, where members of the presbytery have been saying prayers for his safe return.
