One of Spain's most popular tourist regions has banned "happy hour" drink offers in bars and nightclubs.

The regional government of Catalonia, whose capital is Barcelona, said offenders could face fines of up to £7,000.

The measure is included in a new regional health bill which bans offers such as two drinks for the price of one during certain times and unlimited drinks after payment of an entrance fee.

It said the law was aimed at curbing excessive drinking among young people.

Spanish Health Minister Trinidad Jimenez described the measure as positive and said similar measures will be considered in a new national health bill that is being prepared.
