South Korea to host UNWTO general meeting

Oct 07, 2009

SEOUL - South Korea was chosen as the venue for the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)'s next general meeting, Seoul's culture ministry said Wednesday.

According to the ministry, the decision came during a meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan, where the 154 members of the UNWTO unanimously approved of Seoul's hosting.

"We consider this as a chance for South Korea to prove itself as a country of top tourism policies," the culture ministry said in a press release.

The upcoming event will raise some 15 billion-won (13 million-U.S. dollar) worth economic profit, the ministry said.

The next assembly, as it is held every other year, is slated for 2011.

The UNWTO assembly, the world's largest international conference on tourism, is attended by culture ministers of the member nations and the UNWTO secretary general.

At least 1,500 guests, including government officials, journalists, tourism experts, are expected to attend the 2011 meeting.
