German tourist attacked, stabbed in Melbourne

Sep 28, 2009

Detectives have arrested a man over the savage bashing and stabbing of an 18-year-old German tourist in Melbourne's north yesterday morning.

Heavily-armed special operations police supported plain-clothes officers as they took a 29-year-old man into custody at a Brooklyn home about 1.30pm today.

Properties in Thomastown, the suburb where the tourist was assaulted, and King Street in the city were also raided.

The German tourist received a fractured skull, a broken leg and arm, fractured ribs and upper-body stab wounds in the attack, police said.

Today's arrest was executed by Victoria Police's 'Santiago' taskforce, set up to tackle a series of unsolved shooting crimes across Melbourne.

Homicide squad, armed crime taskforce and crime tasked operations group police were also involved.

The German man and his sister reported the attack at Cheltenham police station shortly before 8am yesterday.

He remains in a serious but stable condition at The Alfred hospital.

Police said the German consulate in Australia was aware of the attack and was in contact with the victim's family.

The Brooklyn man remains in custody and is being quizzed by police.
