US tourist dies after falling from hilly area at Jordan's Petra

Feb 03, 2008

Amman - A US tourist died Saturday when he fell from a rocky area at Jordan's ancient city of Petra, about 200 kilometres south of Amman, according to an official medical spokesman.

The 76-year-old tourist, Robert Sett, suffered a scull fracture and bleeding, and died at the state-run Queen Rania Hospital shortly after first aid was performed on him, the spokesman said.

Tourists had been advised to stay in their hotels to avert risks after the region was hit by heavy snowfalls and slippery conditions.

Authorities had rescued a group of French tourists Thursday after they were stranded by snow in the Petra area, local papers reported.
