EU removes Garuda, three other Indonesian carriers from its blacklist

BRUSSELS -- The European Union says four Indonesian airlines, including Garuda, the country's flag carrier, will be allowed to fly to the continent again because of "significant" air safety improvements.

The EU placed all Indonesian airlines on its international blacklist of banned carriers after a series of deadly air accidents in 2007. An EU statement says Garuda and the three other Indonesian carriers - Mandala, Premiair and Airfast - were removed from the list on Tuesday.

Garuda plans to resume flights to Europe in 2010.

The updated list of carriers still on the blacklist include airlines from Equatorial Guinea, Indonesia, the Kyrgyz Republic, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Swaziland and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
